Caption: Everything you need to know about therapy. Therapy is becoming increasingly common due to a shift in attitudes towards mental health issues. Therapy refers to a variety of treatments that aim to help people identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts and behaviours. Jade Thomas, Psychotherapist & Founder of the Luxe Psychology Practice, has answered the most frequently asked questions about therapy. What is a common misconception about therapy? There are a number of misconceptions surrounding therapy, including that you will be cured after only one session. ”It is important to note firstly that many practitioners work in different ways therefore everyone will have an individual and unique experience of therapy, however, some common misconceptions might include: you will feel 'cured' after one session - unfortunately this is not possible, it is possible to feel better after the first session but research shows often a minimum of 6 sessions is required before any psychological or therapeutic changes can occur.” What types of therapy are available? There are a number of different types of therapy, including talking therapy or counselling, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Discussing talking therapy, the expert shares, "The focus for this type of therapy is often the therapist will offer active listening and empathy so you might not necessarily focus on skills-based work or strategies, but it offers a 'safe space' to explore experiences or feelings.” Turning to CBT, she adds, "This approach is typically short term therefore offers practical approaches in managing symptoms or behaviours. It can be particularly useful for anxiety, panic and depression but can be applied to almost any experience." What should you look for in a therapist? It is important that you click with your therapist and it can take time to find the right one for you and your specific needs. "Finding the right therapist is a very personal decision, it is important to think about someone you would feel comfortable talking to.” ”Often people have an initial preference based on demographics such as gender, age, location etc. However, it is also important the therapist is experienced in treating the problem you are presenting with, therefore, they will be able to provide the most appropriate treatment approach.” What advice would you give to someone hesitant about starting therapy? It is normal to be anxious about starting therapy because it can be uncomfortable to share your thoughts and feelings with a stranger. ”Do your research before seeking therapy to provide you with a good knowledge of what you are looking for. Speak to different therapists and find a therapist you feel comfortable with. Share with your therapist your anxieties or hesitations about starting therapy, that is what they are there for and will be able to support you in feeling more comfortable.” THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
