Headline: Floating Gardens Keep Farming Afloat in Flood-Prone Bangladesh

Caption:

A floating garden in Nazirpur Upazila, Pirojpur District, Bangladesh. Floating agriculture is a centuries-old farming practice in the flood-prone wetlands of southwestern Bangladesh, where farmland remains submerged during much of the monsoon season. Floating beds, locally known as dhap, are made from water hyacinth and other aquatic plants that decompose into a nutrient-rich growing medium. The beds rise and fall with changing water levels, allowing vegetables and seedlings to be cultivated without soil. The practice supports food production and livelihoods in waterlogged areas and is widely recognized as a climate adaptation practice.
