People participate in Gai Jatra, also known as Sa Paru, a Newar festival commemorating family members who died during the past year, in Kathmandu, Nepal, on August 29, 2026. Gai Jatra, meaning the Festival of Cows, is observed for eight days. Families honor the deceased by leading cows or people dressed as cows in processions. Devotees offer milk, fruits, bread, beaten rice and yogurt, believing that a cows tail helps the deceased cross the Vaitarani River and reach the afterlife. The festival is associated with Malla King Pratap Malla, who introduced the procession to console his queen after the death of their son and to show her that death and grief are universal. When she remained inconsolable, humorous performances were introduced, establishing Gai Jatras tradition of satire and social commentary. Processions pass through Hanuman Dhoka accompanied by music, dance, theatrical performances and songs of grief.
