Headline: At Least 157 Killed As Devastating Flash Floods Hit Nepal

A catastrophic flash flood swept through Nepal’s northern border region after an ice-and-rock avalanche caused a sudden surge in the Lhende River near the Nepal-China border, sending massive volumes of water, mud and debris downstream into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.
The disaster devastated settlements in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, sweeping away homes, roads, bridges, vehicles and other infrastructure and severely damaging hydropower and power facilities.
In Nuwakot, riverside settlements including Trishuli Bazaar, Devighat and Betrawati suffered extensive destruction, with homes swept away and large quantities of mud and debris deposited across communities.
Around 60 houses near Trishuli Bazaar were reportedly swept away, while the Trishuli and Devighat hydropower projects and a solar power plant were damaged.
The flooding also disrupted transportation and communications and prompted authorities to evacuate vulnerable riverside communities and issue warnings along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli and Narayani river systems.
The death toll in Nepal had climbed to at least 157, while hundreds of people remained missing, including tourists, travelers, foreign nationals, soldiers and police personnel, as search-and-rescue operations continued. Nepalese authorities reported 403 people missing, including 341 foreign nationals.
Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel were deployed to affected areas, with helicopters supporting rescue and evacuation efforts. On the Chinese side of the border, at least three people were reported dead and 265 missing following mudslides in Tibet’s Gyirong County.
Authorities continued to assess casualties and property damage as access to several affected areas remained difficult because of destroyed roads and bridges, heavy sediment and continuing flood risks.
The disaster caused widespread destruction across the Nepal-China border region and disrupted a major trade and travel corridor between Nepal and Tibet
