A few hours old lamb of the East Prussian Skudde lies in the midday sun on the Jacobswiese, an orchard meadow. The Skudde is considered one of the oldest domestic sheep breeds in Europe - robust, frugal and at the same time highly endangered. Its place on the Red List of endangered livestock breeds makes every birth a small glimmer of hope. A few years ago, a meadow orchard was planted here directly on the Way of St. James - deliberately with old, almost forgotten varieties. It should not only delight pilgrims and walkers, but also contribute to the preservation of traditional fruit tree species.
