The Nao Victoria on the river Tyne at sunrise this morning

The Nao Victoria is a faithful replica of the famed Spanish vessel captained by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano, which played a key role in one of the greatest maritime adventures of all time: the first circumnavigation of the globe, completed over five centuries ago (1519–1522), departing from and returning to Seville, (Spain).

Built from oak and pine using traditional shipbuilding techniques and meticulous historical accuracy, the Nao Victoria is a true masterpiece of Spanish naval carpentry. It has its own modern legacy too: between 2004 and 2006, it completed its own voyage around the world, sailing over 26,000 nautical miles and making port in 17 countries. Since then, it has continued sailing across the globe, visiting over 100 ports in the United States and Europe, and welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors as a floating museum
