Headline: Where The River Sells Fruit: Inside The Timeless Charm Of Barisal’s Floating Market

Caption:

The floating market stands at the heart of Barisal’s charm - often called the 'Venice of Bengal'. While no one knows exactly when this river-based trade began, it’s a tradition that has flowed through generations for over a century.

Despite the rapid development across Bangladesh, this unique, water-oriented way of life remains untouched. Every day, local farmers and wholesalers converge here, not only to sell guavas - known locally as 'Bengal’s Apple' - but also a variety of other fruits.

The southern region, especially Jhalakathi Sadar, Swarupkathi, and Banaripara in Pirozpur, is renowned for guava cultivation. For many farmers, it’s their main livelihood - so much so that a poor guava season can bring year-long hardship. Unfortunately, this year is one of those difficult ones. Yet, the vibrant spirit of this floating market continues, echoing the resilience of the people who live by the rhythm of the river.
