Several people have been injured and residents evacuated following a powerful explosion at a petrol station in Rome on Friday morning (4July2025).

According to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, eight police officers and one firefighter have been hurt in the blast. Emergency crews remain at the site, working to extinguish the fire.

A statement from the Italian fire brigade reads: “Explosion around 8 am at a petrol station in via dei Gordiani, in the Casalino area of ​​Rome. One of the firefighters who intervened was involved.


“The teams are busy putting out the flames that are affecting the judicial warehouse in the back of the petrol station. Some injured people have been rescued. Intervention in progress, 10 teams at work.”

Eyewitness accounts shared on social media and reported by local media suggest the incident began with a fire, followed by two explosions in rapid succession at around 08:18 local time. The second blast was reportedly the more powerful of the two.

The explosion occurred near Via di Gordiani 32, in the Prenestino district in the south-east of the city. A nursery and sports club are located nearby, and police are continuing to assess the surrounding area for any further damage.
