A participant throws pine branches into a bonfire, during the celebration of the luminaries in San Bartolome de Pinares in Spain. The inhabitants of San Bartolom de Pinares celebrate the festival of the luminaries every January 16 in honor of the patron saint of animals, Saint Anthony the Abbot. It is a tradition that dates back 500 years with the aim of purifying the animals with the smoke of the bonfires and protecting them for the coming year.
