British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Kyiv on 16 January, marking his second trip to the Ukrainian capital and his first since becoming prime minister in July 2024.

The visit included a solemn ceremony as Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky laid flowers at the Wall of Remembrance of Fallen Defenders in Kyiv's Mykhailivska Square, honouring those who lost their lives defending Ukraine.

During his trip, Starmer is signing a landmark "100 Year Partnership" treaty aimed at forging a long-term alliance between the UK and Ukraine. The wide-ranging agreement will focus on defence, energy, and trade, with an emphasis on fostering innovation and mutual security.

Starmer said in a statement: “This is not just about the here and now, it is also about an investment in our two countries for the next century, bringing together technology development, scientific advances and cultural exchanges, and harnessing the phenomenal innovation shown by Ukraine in recent years for generations to come. The power of our long-term friendships cannot be underestimated.”
The treaty, built on nine strategic pillars, will include enhanced maritime military cooperation and efforts to strengthen security in the Baltic, Black, and Azov seas. It will also foster collaborations in healthcare, agriculture, space, and drone technology, according to the UK government.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK Valerii Zaluzhnyi welcomed the partnership, highlighting plans to resume the Strategic Partnership Dialogue, a framework for addressing bilateral issues and enhancing cooperation.
