At 00:30 on 3 October 2024, emergency services in Ukraine managed to extinguish a fire that had engulfed 65 square metres of a five-storey residential building in Kharkiv’s Saltivka district.

The blaze was caused by a Russian guided aerial bomb that struck the building. Emergency and rescue operations are still ongoing at the site.

At present, ten people are reported to have been injured in the attack, including a three-year-old child.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the situation, stating: “Kharkiv, Saltivka, an ordinary residential building hit by a Russian bomb.”
He added: “The rescue operation is now underway. A search is ongoing for anyone who may have been injured. At this time, we know of eight wounded. All will receive the necessary assistance.”

Zelensky also used the moment to call for increased international support, emphasising: “For such Russian attacks to stop, Ukraine must receive the necessary and, most importantly, sufficient help from the world, from its partners. Every leader knows exactly what needs to be done. It is important to be decisive.”

The bombing is part of ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with civilian areas frequently coming under fire, sparking widespread international condemnation.
