This video shows the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka peninsula, on the far-eastern coast of Russia.
A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake early on Sunday morning (18August2024) triggered the volcanic eruption and sent plumes of ash into the sky.
The surrounding area was covered in a layer of ash following the eruption but there have been no reports of damage or injuries in the sparsely populated region in the aftermath of the quake.
Officials at Russia’s Institute of Volcanology and Seismology told locals, “not to approach the active volcano and observe the event from a safe distance.”
The Institute released a video and images showing the ash cloud over Shiveluch on their Telegram channel (@IViS_DVO_RAN: https://t.me/IViS_DVO_RAN). It stretched more than 490km (304 miles) east and southeast of the volcano.
Russian officials fear the region could shortly be hit by an even stronger quake.
