Headline: NASA Forced To Abandon Boeing Starliner Launch
Caption:
NASA was forced to abandon its landmark launch of an Atlas 5 rocket boosting Boeing's long-delayed Starliner ship carrying astronauts for the first time on Monday (06May2024).
It was fueled for blastoff Monday night for its first piloted test flight.
However, trouble struck after a valve in the rocket's upper stage that was heard humming forced mission managers to order a scrub just two hours before takeoff.
Commander Barry "Butch" Wilmore and co-pilot Sunita Williams were in the process of strapping in for launch, with two hours till blast off, when the launch was called off.
NASA has delayed the launch until at least Friday "to complete data analysis on a pressure regulation valve on the liquid oxygen tank of the Atlas 54 rocket's Centaur upper stage and determine whether it is necessary to replace the valve."
NASA will assess if the valve has to be replaced, meaning the rocket would have to be hauled back for repairs, delaying another launch attempt to Sunday or later next week.
