Headline: New York rally held over death on Riders Island

Caption: Family members of individuals who have died while in city jails were joined by advocates for criminal justice reform, elected officials and supporters in the pouring rain at an emergency rally at City Hall after the death of Manuel Luna on Rikers Island last week. He is the second person to die while in the custody of the Department of Corrections in the first nineteen days of 2024. Speakers addressed Mayor Eric Adams recent veto of a bill passed by the City Council banning solitary confinement (Intro. 549-A) and call on city council members to override the veto. The rally was organized by Jails Action Coalition and The New York Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinements (CAIC) Halt Solitary campaign. Family members and supporters hold tombstone banners with the names of people who have died in city jails including Marvin Pines and William Johnstone.
