These images and this video footage shows recovery efforts after Ukraine was hit by a mass barrage of Russian missiles overnight on 2 January 2024.

The cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv and their surrounding areas were hardest hit. High-rise residential buildings, warehouses, and critical infrastructure.

An early estimate of the casualties released by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that four people had died and there were almost 100 injured. He went on to state that the casualty rate would have been much higher without air defence systems provided by Ukraine’s allies.

Zelensky said: “At this time, it is known about 92 wounded. Everyone gets help. Unfortunately, four people died. My condolences to family and friends.

He added: “For the third day already, our air defence soldiers are doing incredible work. Since December 31, Russian inhumans have already used about 170 "shahed" drones and dozens of rockets of various types. The absolute majority of them were aimed at civilian objects. I thank all partners who help in strengthening our air shield. And it's obvious that it helps save hundreds of lives every day and every night that would have been taken by Russian terror if it weren't for Patriots and other defense systems.

In Kyiv, more than 130 people were evacuated from a high-rise building in Solomyansk district while firefighters battled a fire at a ruptured gas main near a car dealership that was left devastated by the attack.

In Kharkiv, what officials described as “a massive rocket attack on the city” caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure.
