For the Memorial Day for the Defenders of Ukraine an installation was created in the city’s Soborna Square, using empty military boots containing Ukrainian flags to remember those lost in the country’s conflict with Russia. Vitalii Kim, the Governor of the Regional Military Administration attended the memorial and said in a statement: “We should remember all those who gave their lives for our Independence. We must remember the feat of our people. Every defender and every defender. This day is a symbol of this. Glory to Ukraine! Glory to her Heroes!” Mourners also carried sunflowers - a symbol of resistance since the early days of Russia's 2022 invasion. The plant gained significance when an old woman offered a Russian soldier sunflower seeds so they would grow from the soil after he was slain.
