Several vehicles caught fire in the centre of the northern Italian city after a blast came from a van, its mayor Giuseppe Sala confirmed. La Repubblica reported that the vehicle was carrying oxygen cylinders when it exploded, which then triggered “domino” explosions. Following the initial blast, other vehicles were also destroyed by flames. At least five cars and four mopeds were caught in the explosion and fires - scorching nearby building apartment and business fronts. A school and nursing home were evacuated. The mayor ruled out a deliberate attack as the cause and revealed that the driver of the van, who suffered minor injuries, had told the fire brigade the fire had started in the engine. "He quickly grabbed the oxygen cylinders he was carrying... he tried to limit the damage but then there was an explosion," Sala added.
