The city was only fully taken by Russian forces last week, following an 82 day siege of the Azovstal steelworks. The city is still believed to be largely without electricity. The Ukrainian mayor of Mariupol has said that since the beginning of the Russian invasion in up to 20 thousand civilians have been killed. The council in exile claimed only a few dozen locals turned up to an official event marking Russia’s ‘Victory Day’ celebrations on 9 May, “Hence the increasing information pressure on people.” They added: “That could be enough for the Russians. But you can't feed our people with such ‘noodles’ (nonsense).”
