Headline: Serving U.S. Soldier Forms Inspirational Bond With Injured Mother Cat

Caption: A serving U.S. soldier formed such a bond with a mother cat she is now trying to bring the feline’s family home. Sergeant Kelsey, stationed at an undisclosed location in the Middle East, was approached by the poorly cat at her camp base a few weeks into her tour. It was in a bad way with multiple afflictions, but its plucky nature proved an inspiration. After showing the cat affection, and naming it Sergeant Whiskers, it bought its two kittens to the camp a few days later. Sergeant Kelsey has contacted New York-based non-profit Guardians of Rescue who are helping gather donations to relocate Sergeant Whiskers to America. Sergeant Kelsey explains: “She would come from across the parking lot but couldn’t make it the whole way without laying down. She would walk, then lay, then walk etc. When she started coming around, we noticed her nose was severely scabbed, her tail broken and kinked, her eyes were scabbed, she was very thin and she moved with very little energy. It was 126° when she started coming around so we gave her cool water to try and help. She wasn’t too interested in this. From the beginning she held a special place in my heart. She was a fighter. She was physically, and probably mentally, run down but she continued to fight for her survival and her life. This attitude of hers inspired me every single day. No matter what information or conditions I was met with, I too would fight to get through it. Because of her attitude, demonstrated perseverance, and survival we named her Sergeant Whiskers.” "We are honoured to help relocate these pets back to the soldiers' home states, so they can live with their families," president and co-founder of Guardians of Rescue, Robert Misseri, said in a statement. "But it's something that we can't do alone. We have to have the support from the public in order to help make a mission like this be successful." “The costs for relocating the pets add up quickly for medical care, airfare, fees, and more,” added Misseri. “But we want to provide the support to our soldiers and we will do everything we can to help their wish come true. We appreciate any donations to help get Sgt. Whiskers and her babies to safety.”
