Headline: Biblical Book of Judges Discoveries in Israel

Caption: July 12, 2021, Kiryat Gat, Israel: Archaeologist Prof. Yosef Garfinkel (front right) of the Hebrew University oversees excavations at the site of Khirbet a Rai in the Judaean foothills, previously identified as the biblical Philistine town of Ziklag from the days of King David, the location in which David found refuge while fleeing from King Saul and from here went to Hebron to be anointed as King. An unprecedented Proto Canaanite script ink inscription on a pottery vessel discovered bears the name Jerubbaal, the name of the Judge Gideon Ben Yoash from the Book of Judges. The findings at the excavation conducted by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Israel Antiquities Authority and Macquarie University, Sydney, now push the site’s timeline back 100 years to 1,100 BCE, the period of the Judges.
