Headline: Artist creates life-size statue of Suffragette campaigner Emily Davison for Epsom Town Centre

Caption: Artist Christine Charlesworth has created a life-size statue of Suffragette campaigner Emily Davison that is to be unveiled in Epsom Town Centre tomorrow (8th June). The suffragette campaigner, most famous for losing her life at the Epsom Derby in 1913 in protest at women being denied the right to vote, is not the first leading figure of early 20th century feminism to be immortalised in statue form. But Christine Charlesworth, the Milford-based sculptor working on the project, says this will be a different format to many more traditional statues. "I'm very much for sculptures not to be on plinths. I want Emily to be relatable – for people to know more about her. She was a very interesting woman, there was a lot more than getting accidentally killed by the King's horse." Originally planned for an unveiling on International Women's Day [March 8 2021], but now planned for June, the bronze Davison will sit on a newly-constructed granite bench just next to the Epsom marketplace.
