Headline: U.S. Navy Showcases New Type Of Unmanned Surface Vessel

Caption: The U.S. Navy has showcased a new type of unmanned surface vessel. An ADARO unmanned system took to the waters off San Diego to interact with the Navy’s newest Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Oakland during U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Unmanned Integrated Battle Problem (UxS IBP) 21. The 22 April exercise saw the small vessel manoeuvring near the warship. It is thought the ADARO could be used to extend intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) coverage for the fleet when operating close to coastlines. SeaLandAire Technologies, Inc., the Michigan-based developer of Adaro, say: “The ADARO is a rugged, man-portable, X-class unmanned surface vehicle designed around a modular payload capability. Its series-hybrid energy system provides quiet electric-only operation, even at top speeds, while the heavy fuel range extender significantly lengthens mission life. The platform is designed with a modular architecture to facilitate field servicing and repair. The flexible payload architecture allows extremely rapid integration of new payloads. Both software and hardware are designed for ease of use; ADARO can be set up and deployed within minutes.” UxS IBP 21 is a U.S. Pacific Fleet exercise, executed by U.S. 3rd Fleet, designed to integrate manned and unmanned capabilities into operational scenarios to generate warfighting advantages. The week-long event involves surface, subsurface, and aerial unmanned assets, operating with littoral combat ships, guided-missile destroyers, guided-missile cruisers, submarines and helicopter squadrons.
