Headline: The Painting That Was Created For The Duke Of Edinburgh's 100th Birthday

Caption: This is the painting that was created for what would have been Prince Philip's 100th birthday (10th June 2021). The stunning gold-leaf portrait was created by Suzi Malin, a renowned portrait painter who has nine portraits in the National Portrait Gallery, including paintings of Sir Elton John and former Prime Minister Lord Hume. The never-before seen portrait, which measures 38cm x 42cm, marks the moment of his last official engagement as a royal in 2017, painted on gold leaf, with incredible detail. Suzi Malin says: “I first met the Duke of Edinburgh, along with the Queen, at the opening of Ondaatje Wing at the National Portrait Gallery. The Duke asked to be introduced to me as he wanted to know who had painted the portrait of Lord Hulme.' “After I met him, I did some colour charts of his skin, which I have used for painting this portrait from photographs taken of his last official engagement. I was painting this as the Duke was in hospital, willing him to get better with every stroke, and today is a very sad day. I think the portrait reflects the light the Duke brought to the world and is a celebration of a very full life lived.”
