Headline: Deer Rescued After Getting Tangled In Fencing

Caption: A stag needed help after getting fencing tangled around his antlers. RSPCA inspector Georgina Bowles was called to fields off Breadsell Lane in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, on Tuesday afternoon (6 April) by a member of the public who’d spotted the stricken animal. Georgina said: “The poor stag had run into the fencing and got it tangled tightly around his antlers. “In his panic, he’d managed to rip two wooden posts out of the ground and drag those into the undergrowth but could only get so far because he was tethered by the rest of the fenceline which he was still attached to.” Goergina knew she wouldn’t be able to help him alone and called for help from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. “These deer are incredibly strong and, particularly when frightened, can be very dangerous if they kick out or thrash around,” Georgina said. “He was very feisty despite being exhausted so we threw a blanket over his head to calm him. “Amazingly, the fire officers were able to cut the rope from his antlers completely without getting too close and then he was free and jumped to his feet and darted off into the undergrowth.” A Sussex Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 14:11 on 6th April to carry out an animal rescue on Breadsell Lane, Crowhurst. It was reported that a deer was severely entangled in rope and in distress. “Crews from Battle and Uckfield attended and assisted by the RSPCA helped to cut the rope that was entangled around the deer’s antlers and free the deer.”
