Headline: Impressive Four-Legged Robot Can Now Travel On Wheels

Caption: A cutting-edge four-legged robot has now been fitted with wheels. The ANYmal is a quadrupedal robot designed for autonomous operation in challenging environments. Robotics Systems Lab of ETH Zurich have this month (Oct) shown off the addition of four wheels, which allows the innovation to become a roller-walking robot able to perform hybrid locomotion in challenging environments. The four nonsteerable and torque-controlled wheels, seek to investigate the robot’s ability to explore indoor and outdoor environments. The addition also has the benefit of allowing the robot to use less battery power by rolling on wheels. An impressive recent showcase saw the ANYmal easily wheeling up hills, walking up steps, and performing dynamic rolling and walking sequences. The team’s journal article submitted to IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L) and IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2021 in Xi’an, China, explains: “With our novel whole-body MPC, the robot achieves highly dynamic motions at speeds of up to 4 m/s, while gait sequences are automatically discovered for this complex hybrid platform.” The work was supported in part by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) through the National Centres of Competence in Research Robotics (NCCR Robotics) and Digital Fabrication (NCCR dfab). Besides, it has been conducted as part of ANYmal Research, a community to advance legged robotics.
