Caption: (200903) -- BEIJING, Sept. 3, 2020 (Xinhua) -- Combo photo shows Wei Wei and his wife Chen Rong posing for a photo in the then Shenzhen Central Hospital on its opening day in 1999 (up) and the couple in the now Shenzhen Hospital of Beijing University in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, on Aug. 15, 2020 (bottom, photo taken by Mao Siqian). After graduation from the Tongji Medical College with a doctor's degree, Wei Wei decided to start his new life in Shenzhen because of his appreciation of the city's construction and urban planning. In 1999, Wei Wei became a doctor in the general surgery department of the newly-opened Shenzhen Central Hospital, which changed its name to Shenzhen Hospital of Beijing University in 2001. Wei Wei took the lead to set up the hospital's thyroid & breast surgery department in 2004, which was rated as a key discipline of clinical medicine of the city in 2020. "Shenzhen has taught me how to learn from the youth. It's a place that keeps people moving forward. When you have stepped on a certain level, it will provide you with a ladder to help you step onto a new platform," said Wei. When China established the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in 1980, its population was less than 30,000. Forty years later, it has developed into the biggest immigrant city in China housing 13 million with its GDP hitting 2.69 trillion yuan (about 389.4 billion U.S. dollars). (Xinhua/Mao Siqian)
