They were captured by Simon Berrow of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG). He explains: “This rarely seen circling behaviour is thought to be a courtship ritual. Ireland is known to be an important feeding ground for basking sharks in the spring and summer and now it seems that it is an important breeding area too.” Despite their size, basking sharks only feed on zooplankton which they filter out of the water, swimming slowly back and forth with their mouths wide open.
