The honeymoon paradise of the Maldives has built the world’s first all-inclusive coronavirus resort to deal with the threat The idyllic island on the Indian Ocean has confirmed its first eight cases of coronavirus but the Maldives government has moved quickly to contain its spread – by having 50 workers build a scenic 30-room quarantine ‘hotel’ in just 10 days to house those stricken by the virus free of charge and in the lap of luxury. The facility is based on the uninhabited Vilivaru Island of Kaafu Atoll, approximately 15 miles from the capital city, Malé, and each of the 30 air-conditioned rooms contains: All-inclusive room-service including breakfast, lunch and dinner On-site mobile medical centre with full-time doctors Flat-screen television with worldwide entertainment centre A fully stocked minibar The island is exclusively for the use of quarantined patients and no other tourists are permitted to visit. Under the guidance of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the government of Maldives has put a number of safety measures in place to minimise the impact of coronavirus on the small island of 436,000 inhabitants. It includes a travel ban from mainland China, effective 4th February 2020, Iran effective 26th February 2020, South Korean regions of North Gyeongsang Province and South Gyeongsang Province effective 03rd March 2020, Italy effective 08th March 2020, Bangladesh effective from 10th March 2020 to 24th March 2020. Rigorous medical controls have been set up at the country’s international port and airport, but it is the creation of the pristine coronavirus resort that has set the Maldives apart as global leaders try to contain the spread of the infection. Minister for Tourism, His Excellency Ali Waheed said: “We are ready to face it and we will overcome the situation: Maldives is still the Sunny Side of life and the safest destination in the world”. But the Government of Maldives has been aggressive in minimising the impact of COVID-19 on the island and the quarantine resort has been constructed to a high standard to be able to cater to the needs of tourists as well as locals where suspected cases are identified. “The resort is set up for the safety of residents and tourists alike. Through the combined efforts of the government under the leadership of His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Maldives demonstrates that it is fully prepared to take action and deal with any suspected cases of coronavirus which reach of the country’s pristine shores.”
