STORY COPY: An all-female team has won a U.S. military weapons loading competition – all dressed in honour of WWII recruitment poster icon Rosie the Riveter. The contest, held on Thursday (7 Jan) at Aviano Air Base, Italy, saw the 31st Munition Squadron beat other teams in the Rapid Aircraft Generation and Employment competition. A U.S. Army spokesperson said: “Aviano 31st MUNS "Bouncing Bettys" are the first ever all-female team to compete in the Rapid Acft Generation & Employment competition there...and they WON.” The team wore navy blue coveralls and polka-dot bandanas to pay tribute to Rosie the Riveter and the female ordnance workers, who paved the way before them. Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of World War II, representing the women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II, many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who joined the military.
