Headline: U.S. Safety Authority Shows Devastating Effects of Christmas Tree Fires

STORY: These chilling scenes show how quickly a Christmas tree fire can spread. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has made several videos graphically illustrating the fire risks the holiday season can bring. Shocking videos show the difference between a watered Christmas tree and a dry one in potential to go up in flames. A comparison test between the two shows flames from the dry tree already spreading across the ceiling after just ten seconds. After a minute the watered tree has not caught alight, while the dry tree test room is engulfed in an inferno. In a November 2019 statement the CPSC said: “From 2014 to 2016, there were about 100 Christmas tree fires and about 1,100 candle fires that resulted in 10 deaths, 150 injuries, and nearly $50 million in property damage each of those years.” They advise: “Make sure your live Christmas tree stays well-watered throughout the holiday season. If you’re buying an artificial tree, look for the “Fire Resistant” label. Put lit candles where you can easily see them and away from flammable items like curtains. Blow candles out before leaving a room.” Another video illustrates the danger of turkey fryers. CPSC advise that overfilling with oil or attempting to fry a frozen turkey is highly dangerous, and frying should always be carried out outside your property.
