Across the dormant water of the Great Lake likes Castle Howard’s new adventure playground, Skelf Island and the naughty Skelves who inhabit the island are up to no good. The Skelves have seen many young visitors frequent their abodes over the summer but now with autumn’s chill settling in, another mysterious side of the land of the Skelves if about to be revealed. This October half term Castle Howard joins hands with Rusticus, an open-air theatre company, to stage a mysterious trail through the eerie Skelf woods. Skelf Island’s ingenious treetop nest structures, connected by rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment will be transformed with atmospheric lights and spooky smoke effects. The Skelves, played by creative actors from Rusticus, will lead the children through the misty, moody trail, in quest of clues to unlock the age-old knowledge of woodland wildlife and their habitats. Additional to the series of daily activities, there will also be face painting and seasonal Halloween treats to add to the bone-chilling fun. Rewarding prizes will be presented to the courageous who dare to complete the route – there’s no age restriction, just a brave restriction! The Halloween trail at Skelf Island together with the Straw Bale Maze in the Walled Garden will be available from 19th October to 3rd November. A gang of live Skelves will be in residence on 19th-20th October and from 26th-3rd November. Families of all ages are welcome.
