Headline: Cumbria Farmer Rescues Lambs From Underground Pipes

Caption: PICTURE SHOWS: Farmer Colin Bateman had to use a mini digger to move ten lengths of concrete pipe to free eight lambs .... STORY COPY: Would EWE believe it? A Cumbrian sheep farmer has a woolly problem when he heard a familiar cry from beneath his feet on Thursday (9 May). Colin Bateman, based outside Kendal, had to fetch his mini digger to dig up drainage pipes – as they were filled with lost lambs. Colin’s wife Amy explains: “My husband rescued two lambs from this pipe in our field yesterday. He has been back through the field today (Friday), heard a noise and dug out another six. “The mini digger was needed as ten lengths of concrete pipe were removed to free them all. All alive and well. “They’ve been in about two days as the sheep and lambs were moved as a flock out of that field two days ago. The pipe is a stream drain and has been there for years and none have ever gone in it before, until now, they’ve obviously just followed each other. They’ve survived as the lambs are a few weeks old and more robust. "It was a complete fluke that it happened, but we will downsize the drain when it is repaired.”
