Based on the Great Yorkshire Showground, many of the 14 rooms in the Pavilions are named after rivers in Yorkshire and as part of refurbishment, works by Hugh Miller have been commissioned to celebrate this theme. A 7ft x 7ft masterpiece takes centre stage in the Swale and Esk Suite, where Royals and VIPS are entertained during the Great Yorkshire Show. The room is also available for hire for events throughout the year. The painting was inspired by the magnificent scenery on the River Swale below Richmond Castle, HughÕs favourite place to paint and draw inspiration from. Hugh said: ÒRichmond is a very special place; the Swale is the most amazing river where the contrast between calm flat reflections and the drama of the waterfalls is hypnotic. I have always had an affinity with water and the River Wharfe, Nidd, Swale and Esk are a constant source of inspiration for my paintings.Ó HughÕs paintings can be viewed in the reception area of Pavilions of Harrogate as well as in many of its rooms. Hugh said: ÒMy family have been members of The Yorkshire Agricultural Society since 1948. I very much enjoy the thought of my paintings being viewed by members of the Royal family when they visit the Great Yorkshire Show. Painting pictures for big bright rooms with high ceilings named after the rivers IÕve been researching was an opportunity and an honour.Ó Pavilions of Harrogate has recently undergone a refurbishment after a hugely successful year in 2018 which saw a record number of events hosted in the venue. Heather Parry, Managing Director of Pavilions of Harrogate, said: ÒWe were introduced to HughÕs work in 2016 and have been keen to hang his pictures at the Pavilions ever since. We were blown away by his latest series based on reflections, the idea that he was working on rivers that our function rooms were named after, created an amazing synergy. We think his work provides the perfect aesthetic compliment to the exciting modernisation work which we have carried out ready for the Summer season.Ó Born in Harrogate, Hugh graduate from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1998, tutored under Turner prize-winner Chris Ofili. Since then Hugh has worked on commissions and sold/exhibited work all over the world. The iconic Pavilions of Harrogate opened in 1996 to host Royals and VIPs during the Great Yorkshire Show. Events are now held there nearly every day of the year and there has been a rolling programme of refurbishment work including The White Pavilion which has been upgraded with special flooring, electrics and paving to host outdoor weddings.
