Mural artist Lee Ferry will be wowing visitors to this yearÕs Harrogate Spring Flower Show (25-28 April) with ideas for transforming the bleakest of back streets with his own brand of garden graffiti. The showÕs theme for 2019 is #kerbcouture, exploring how the urban environment could be revolutionised by the use of plants and flowers. Lee, who is based in Stanley, County Durham, aims to inspire visitors to cheer up dreary courtyards and bare garden walls by creating a colourful street mural live during the show. After starting out as a cartoonist and sign-writer, Lee formed his company, Custom Artwerk, seven years ago. His work has ranged from a roof-sized rendering of Darth Vader to the crests on the gates of Newcastle United Football Club. Show Director Nick Smith said: ÒNearly every garden has a blank wall, bare fence or awkward corner we are not really sure what to do with, so we wanted to challenge our visitors to think about how art could help to transform a space, whether combined with plants and flowers or as a stand-alone mural. ÒGraffiti has traditionally been seen as something illicit and illegal but, used in the right way and, of course, with right permissions, it can really help to transform an urban scene.Ó #kerbcouture will feature a street of bloom-bombed buildings and pavements, plus a range of small-scale show gardens challenging designers to think vertically in The Blank Wall Project or make every inch count with Square Yards. mfÉ -2- Staged at the Great Yorkshire Showground, the Harrogate Spring Flower Show attracts up to 60,000 visitors and 1,000 exhibitors each year. Attractions include full-sized show gardens with themes ranging from mental health to urban planning, breath-taking displays by nearly 100 top plant nurseries and BritainÕs biggest exhibition by flower arrangers and florists.
