Headline: The Solution To Reducing Food Waste? Smart Storage Containers Will Tell You When Food Is About to Go Bad

Caption: A Chicago-based tech startup has created a line of food-storage products that alert users when the contents of their fridge are about to go out of date. Designed by Ovie, the tupperware-style products includes Smart Tags, glowing discs that signal if an expiry date is approaching through easily recognisable colour coding. Green indicates a recently tagged food, yellow a food that should be eaten as a priority, and red a food that is likely no longer safe to eat. These small trackers fit into the lids of Ovie's Tupperware-style containers. They can also be attached to generic storage containers or food packaging using the Ovie Connect, a circular holster you can stick anywhere, or the Ovie Clip. The kit also includes a hub that allows the SmartTags to connect to the mobile app or a smart home system like Alexa or Google Home. You'll be able to use the Ovie mobile app or your smart home assistant to record what food you're saving. The system can then estimate how long the item will last, based on Ovie's database of typical food spoilage times, and begin its countdown to the expiration date. "People don't want to waste food — it just happens," said Ovie CEO and co-founder Ty Thompson. "We're busy, we invest time and resources to make a great meal, and then we end up throwing away a large amount of food simply because we forget about it." "We wanted to help solve this problem by creating a product that would be simple to use and bring a more mindful approach to food storage." The Smarterware kits are expected to begin shipping in March 2019 with prices starting at $130.00.
