Caption: These stunning sculptures have been built from CANS. Presented by Arts Brookfield, the Canstruction New York Exhibition sees New York's top architects, engineers, and construction firms designed and built 30 awe inspiring 'canstructures', constructed entirely out of unopened cans of food, in one overnight build. The exhibit at Brookfield Place (BFPL) is free, but visitors are encouraged to donate to the project by bringing nonperishable cans of food and dropping them off at the 2nd level of 230 Vesey Street. At the conclusion of the exhibit, the structures are disassembled and the cans from the structures and from the public are donated to City Harvest, New York City's largest food rescue organization. This unique event results in the largest annual donation of canned food from a single event to City Harvest. Since the program's inception, over 1 million cans of food have been donated to City Harvest. "For 26 years, Canstruction New York has been the most extraordinary design competition for architecture, engineering, and construction firms that not only raises awareness about hunger, but provides a solution with the donation of hundreds of thousands of cans of food to City Harvest to help feed New Yorkers in need," said Katie Devlin, AIA, President of Construction New York, Inc. "The exhibition has to be seen in person to fully comprehend the artistry of each sculpture." "Almost half of New Yorkers struggle to cover basic expenses, meaning many of our neighbors are forced to choose between things like paying rent and buying groceries," said Jilly Stephens, Chief Executive Officer of City Harvest. "That's why City Harvest is committed to feeding the 1.2 million New Yorkers including 1 in 5 children who do not always know where their next meal is coming from. Our work is possible thanks to the support of partners like Canstruction, who we've been working with for 26 years. We look forward to distributing the food we rescue from this special event to hundreds of community food programs across New York City." Canstruction New York is presented in partnership with Arts Brookfield, best known for making world class cultural experiences accessible and presenting diversity in the arts. "Arts Brookfield is excited to host Canstruction for its 11th year. The charity event is a great way to kickoff the holiday season and demonstrate BFPL's commitment to our local communities,” said Elysa Marden, Vice President, Arts Brookfield. "There is no better way to celebrate the season of giving than giving back, and we are proud to participate. “ The Canstruction New York Exhibition, which runs through Thursday, November 15th, is open to the public daily from 9:30am to 8:30pm.
