The annual event, now in its 11th year, sees students from Tokyo's Musashino Art University and locals from Niigata city fashion their creations on wooden skeletal frames. Scultures include a goat, mammoth, hippo and sabre-tooth cat. The festival started in 2008 when Niigata’s farmers asked advice from Tokyo's Musashino Art University on turning excess harvested rice straw into artworks.
