Caption: PICTURE SHOWS: Borth, Carefree Days on the Beach c1933 ... STORY COPY: With the recent hot summer we’ve all enjoyed, might this be the time to bring back the parasol – that essential fashion accessory of the past? These fascinating vintage British pictures, dated from the 1880s until the 1930s, show elegant ladies keeping the sun from their fashionably pale skins with the umbrella-like accessories. They range from a parade of well-attired holidaymakers enjoying the view in Scarborough in 1897 to a more informal, but still smartly dressed, family in 1933 on Borth beach in Wales. Two ladies enjoy a punt along a river in 1904 Shalford, Surrey, while Queen Victoria is protected from the Sun's rays at her Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 1897. Part of the Francis Frith Collection, they form part of an amazing national treasure of images becoming available online for the first time. The magnificent archive of historical photographs that Mr Frith and the Frith company photographers created between 1860 and 1970 bears fascinating witness to the changes that took place in around 8,000 cities, towns and villages throughout Britain over more than a century of incredible transformation.
