Firefighters were called to a house in Eagle, Idaho, Sunday (20 May), where a homeowner had observed the critter wedged in a steel fence. The crew were confronted with the rear end of the stricken animal - which made it easier to gently pull the bars apart with a Halligan bar tool. Amazingly, once freed, the beaver sat and faced its rescuers and spent time staring at them before wandering off. Battlion Chief Nevil Humphreys told Idaho Statesman: "He went through, turned around and sat on his tail. He just sat there and looked at everybody. We figured he was really tired, or he didn't want to turn his back."
