As National Bed Month reminds us all that a sound sleep is good for our health, a homeless hound at Dogs Trust Shoreham is having a helping hand to get to sleep from staff reading him a bed-time story to help him relax before slumber. Canine carers at the Sussex rehoming centre realised that Red Ted – the German Spitz rescue dog – struggles to go to sleep without his usual bedtime routine, which includes his canine carer reading him a bedtime story, grooming him so he feels more tranquil, as well as a final night-time stroll. At the rehoming centre, it’s ‘bed and barkfest’ for Red Ted, who is so afraid of the dark that staff have to leave a bedside light on for him. The four-year-old pooch has been with the charity for 445 nights, dreaming of finding his special someone. Red Ted’s human chums at Dogs Trust Shoreham have worked closely with him to help boost his confidence, as he was rather wary of new people when he first arrived. The rescue dog was handed over through no fault of his own, as his previous owner moved out of her property and could not take Red Ted with her elsewhere. Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre Manager, Tracey Rae, said: “Red Ted is such a sweet soul – we want to do everything we can at the rehoming centre to ensure he has a settled night and feels more relaxed, even if that means reading him a bedtime story! He is one of the most fun dogs here and loves to run around with his four-legged friends. People shouldn’t be fooled by his size as he is as clever as a Collie and loves learning new tricks. Red Ted has endless amounts of character and energy, and everyone has their fingers (and paws!) crossed that he’ll find a loving home, and someone to have endless slumber parties with, very soon!” This lovable lad is looking for a quiet adult-only home, without visiting children, and would love a garden to call his own. Although Red Ted can have four-legged friends to play with, he would prefer to be the only pet in the household. He can be initially cautious of new people, although once he has formed a bond he is really excited to see his friends.
