Police in Florida have unveiled the nation’s first self-driving police car, a futuristic ‘RoboCop’ vehicle packed with high-tech features like a drone-launching system and AI-powered patrol capabilities.

The Police Unmanned Ground Vehicle (PUG) has taken to the streets in a groundbreaking pilot program designed to change the face of law enforcement.

The sleek cruiser, which resembles a Ford Explorer, is the result of a collaboration between the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) and the innovation-focused Policing Lab. It is equipped with 360-degree cameras, thermal imaging, license plate readers, and audio sensors, making it a crime-fighting powerhouse. But perhaps the most impressive feature is the drone that can launch directly from the roof, further enhancing its ability to monitor and track criminal activity from above.

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, who was on hand to unveil the vehicle at a flash event in Miami, spoke about the PUG’s potential to make the city safer. “It is such an important key piece to provide our community touchpoints and technology that will only make us a safer place to be,” she said, noting that the vehicle won’t replace officers but will assist them during events and emergencies.

The PUG’s AI technology allows it to patrol pre-set routes, deter crime in hotspot areas, and even provide crucial information to the public via its touch-screen windows. This could be a game-changer during natural disasters or mass evacuations. “Imagine during a hurricane, God forbid, where there is an evacuation area, I got a vehicle that I can just have it in those areas dedicated with information on a banner telling citizens what’s going on,” explained Cordero-Stutz.

While the PUG is not designed for high-speed chases, it will be an invaluable tool for routine patrols, particularly in places with limited resources. The vehicle’s integration of AI allows it to automate repetitive tasks like patrolling and reporting, freeing up deputies to focus on more complex aspects of policing.

Marjolijn Bruggeling, the Executive Director of Policing Lab, praised the PUG for its efficiency. “This program offers law enforcement officers a smart high-tech partner in the field,” she said. “The PUG increases situational awareness, automates repetitive tasks, and frees deputies to focus on the complex and human side of policing.”

The program, which will run for a year, will evaluate the PUG’s ability to improve response times, officer safety, and public trust. Miami-Dade is now at the forefront of public safety innovation, with the potential for the PUG to be rolled out across the U.S. if the program proves successful.

However, there’s no denying the hefty price tag – with each PUG costing between $150,000 and $200,000 if more units are purchased. Despite the price, officials are optimistic about the long-term benefits of incorporating such advanced technology into law enforcement.

“We continue to lead in public safety innovation,” said Cordero-Stutz, adding that the PUG is just the beginning of a new era for policing. The vehicle may soon be a familiar sight in communities across America, making streets safer, one high-tech patrol at a time.
