OpenAI Accuses DeepSeek of Trying to Copy U.S. AI Models. OpenAI has warned U.S. lawmakers that Chinese startup DeepSeek is attempting to replicate its AI models and those of other leading American labs. In a memo sent to the U.S. House Select Committee on Strategic Competition with the Chinese Communist Party, OpenAI alleged that accounts linked to DeepSeek employees tried to bypass access restrictions using third-party routers and other masking techniques. The company says DeepSeek used a method known as "distillation," where a newer AI model learns by analyzing outputs from a more advanced one effectively transferring knowledge without direct access to the original system. DeepSeek, owned by hedge fund High-Flyer, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Based in Hangzhou, DeepSeek gained global attention last year with competitive models like DeepSeek-V3 and R1, raising concerns in Washington that China could narrow the AI gap despite U.S. restrictions. OpenAI says it actively removes users suspected of attempting to copy its models — setting the stage for a broader tech rivalry between the two nations.
