Headline: 'Canaletto and the Art of Venice' Exhibition

Caption: The Queens Gallery at Buckingham Palace features a new exhibition, 'Canaletto and the Art of Venice', reuniting two of the painters finest sets of paintings, displayed side byb side for the first time in almost 40 years. Six views of Venice produced in the 1720’s are hung alongside five Roman views painted over 20 years later. Both sets were commissioned from Canaletto by Joseph Smith, the artist’s agent and the greatest patron of the arts in Venice at the time. Smith’s collection was bought almost in its entirety by George III in 1762 to furnish the newly purchased Buckingham House (later Buckingham Palace). Paintings are posed with members of gallery staff. The exhibition runs from 19th May till 12th November 2017.
