Headline: Daniel Fisher David Bowie Art

Caption: It has been announced today (21 Feb) that a London artist is among those spearheading the campaign to build an impressive memorial to David Bowie in Brixton. Daniel Fisher has created stunning artworks that will be sold as part of the crowdfunding campaign to install a nine-metre-tall Aladdin Sane lightning strike sculpture. Situated in Tunstall Place, site of the internationally famous Bowie mural, the sculpture piece will be the first thing seen upon exiting Brixton tube station. Daniel, who also co-owns a Clerkenwell hairdressers, has created a large portrait of Bowie entitled "Dollar days, Brixton nights"using Brixton Pounds; a quirky local currency use by independent local shops and traders. The 39-year-old has also used his illustration skills to add whimsical drawings and vibrant colours over four archive pictures of the singer performing on the Ziggy Stardust tour (1973), Serious Moonlight tour (1983) and 2002's Munich tour. It is hoped the portrait can be auctioned and limited edition prints of the archive pictures sold to help raise funds for the Brixton sculpture. The portrait took around a month to finish, but work on the performance images initially proved overwhelming for Daniel. Luckily, a good friend was able to provide space in their home for him to find the right Bowie vibe. Daniel says: "My friend April, who has seen Bowie live 25 times, was quoting Bowie lyrics at me and playing his songs at full blast. It really began happening and within two hours the majority of it was finished. My friend said 'that's it, don't touch it', and I knew it was finished." "It's been a lot a lot to live up to, but I’ve tried to interpret in my way. I identify with all of the Bowie periods, he was a chameleon and I try to carry that through in my life and style. "I hope the Bowie community gets behind this so the future generations can to be inspired by such an artistic legend. There's a bit of Bowie in everyone." Explaining the process for the "Dollar days, Brixton nights" portrait, Daniel's spokesperson Suzie Quill says: "The remix over the imagery is rather Warhol like, appropriating and popularising Bowie’s characters and influences and moments in time. A bucket of PVA, brightly coloured paint, ink and an assemble of playful chaos a Daniel Fisher experiment is born; a profile of Bowie made up of cut out currency, that's mixed up, pasted on and drawn over. The result is not intended to be overly conceptual, or deep. The complexities lie in randomness and craftwork of layers of paper, shiny symbols of doves, peace signs, no 1’s, and the iconic Aladdin Sane image that made up the 10-pound Brixton note in honour of Bowie. As like Bowie was a collector of ideas and personalities, Daniel’s Bowie piece conjures up similar characteristics and outlandishness and shows that he too is not afraid of experimenting."
